subscribed with that generosity which characterises the population

of this Colony. Already a sum of £173,300 has been collected by the Committee of the Tung Wa Hospital from Chinese and Europeans

in the Colony and from Chinese abroad, and does not include a sum

of $30,000 which I have permitted to be devoted to this fund from

the balance of 259,000 standing to the credit of funds contribut-

-ed by the Peking Government for the relief of the 1906 Typhoon.

I have also permitted $30,000 to be taken from the balance of

£68,000 remaining over from last year Flood Relief Fund. The remainder is earmarked for the building of a protecting sluice gate in the district which was under the particular care of the Hongkong Relief Committee. I have also placed the Lighthouse

Tender "Stanley" and a Police patrol launch at the disposal of the Committee of the Tung Wa Hospital for the distribution of

relief in the West River and Commodore Anstruther has also lent

2 launches from the Examination Service for relief in Canton.

6.

The distribution of relief funds by the Committee of the Tung Wa Hospital is under the supervision of Mr.

S. B. C.Ross, Acting Secretary for Chinese Affairs, and Mr. A. E.

Food has also been lent to assist in supervising distribution of

relief along the West River.

7.

The American Gunboat "Callao" which was at

Canton at the time of the flood has done excellent service in

assisting in the distribution of relief. The American cruiser

"Wilmington" proceeded from here to Canton and has also rendered

invaluable assistance, while the Standard Oil Company has been of

great help in lending its West River launches for relief work.

I have the honour to be,

Bir.

Your most obedient, humble servant,

Ama

Governor,&c..
